New Mexico (SID): Aussie Advance, US eliminated from Medal Contention

July 12, 2013

BOX SCORE: Australia 131, United Arab Emirates 43
BOX SCORE: Canada 94, United States 85

Kazan, Russia --- For Cameron Bairstow and the Australian starters, their 131-43 win over the United Arab Emirates was both a clincher, and a well-deserved break as most starters played sparingly or sat altogether. For the United States, their medal dreams ended when Canada used a strong mid-game push to lead by as many as 16 on the way to a 94-85 win that advanced Canada with a 5-0 record to the medal round.

USA Basketball will drop down into the alternate bracket and battle for ninth place. They will start by taking on Norway, the fourth place team in Pool D at midnight tonight Mountain Time. Australia will take on Pool D champion Lithuania, who went 5-0, tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. Mountain Time.

Bairstow played the least minutes of any of the starters for Australia (Ryan Broekhoff got the entire game off), playing just seven minutes, going 2-for-2 from the field with two points and an assist. He wasn't needed. Australia shot 72% from the field, and had 38 assists and just six turnovers as they led 34-10 at the first quarter break, 65-20 at the half, and 100-28 at the end of three.

For USA Basketball, Alex Kirk returned to action after not playing against the Australian, but he tallied just two minutes at the end of the first quarter, a stanza that saw the U.S. trail just 18-17. Canada used a big second quarter run to pull away at the half 46-36. The US was down 15 late in the third before a pair of long threes, including a half-court buzzer-beater kept the game in reach at 68-59.

The Canadians continued to pull away, outscoring the US in the paint 54-20. The game ended bizarrely with the US dribbling the final 10.6 second left in the dark after power went out in Basket Hall 1 and the game was delayed for several minutes.

Icahn sweetens bid for Dell by adding warrants

By Nicola Leske and Poornima Gupta

(Reuters) - Billionaire investor Carl Icahn and Southeastern Asset Management Inc sweetened their takeover bid for Dell Inc on Friday, adding warrants they said would increase the offer to a range of $15.50 to $18.00 per share from $14.00.

The move is Icahn's latest effort to block a $24.4 billion buyout offer, of $13.65 per share, from company founder Michael Dell and private equity firm Silver Lake.

Under the new offer from Icahn, Dell shareholders would get $14.00 per share and a warrant for every four shares held. The warrant would entitle the holder to buy Dell shares for $20.00 each within the next seven years.

In June, Icahn and Southeastern proposed to buy back 1.1 billion shares at $14 apiece.

Dell's special board committee said it was reviewing Icahn's latest offer and is willing to meet him to discuss his various proposals.

"It is critical that Dell shareholders not be distracted from the clear choice they must make next week - take $13.65 per share in cash or bear the risks of continuing to hold their Dell shares," it said in a statement.

Icahn wants shareholders to vote against the buyout and then ask a court in Delaware, where Dell is incorporated, to appraise the fair value of the shares.

Dell shareholders will vote on the offer July 18. Dell's shares closed down 0.18 percent at $13.32, reflecting a lack of enthusiasm for Icahn's new offer.

King She, a special situations analyst for Susquehanna Financial Group, said he believes the current value of a warrant issued at Icahn's terms is around $2 to $3.75, and values Icahn's proposal at $13 to $15 per share.

"If Icahn was such a great alternative, you would have thought that Dell's share price would have gone higher," he said. "That tells me that people may not be so positive about Icahn's proposal in general."

Susquehanna Financial Group is a market maker for Dell.

To complicate matters, unless Dell's special board changes its recommendation, any proposal from Icahn will be put to shareholders only if the offer by Michael Dell and Silver Lake is not accepted by shareholders when they meet on July 18.

"The Icahn offer today is a slight improvement but not much," said one investor, adding that he would like the founder to improve his bid.

The investor, who wished to remain anonymous, said Dell's special board committee began losing credibility after it began releasing increasingly dire forecasts for Dell's business.

"It made them look biased," said the investor, who declined to reveal if he would vote for Michael Dell's offer.

Many large shareholders - including Highfields Capital Management, Pzena Investment Management and Yacktman Asset Management - have said they will vote against the Michael Dell-Silver Lake offer because it undervalues the PC maker.

Michael Dell has said the company's shift from a computer maker to a provider of enterprise computing services is best done away from public scrutiny.

Man identified in retesting of World Trade Center remains

NEW YORK (AP) ? Authorities retesting human remains recovered from the World Trade Center site have identified those of a 55-year-old man.

A spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner's office said Wednesday the man's name won't be released at his family's request.

Some 2,750 people died at the World Trade Center in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Wednesday's announcement brings the number of identified victims up to 1,635.

The identification was made from remains collected before May 2002. The last time a person was identified from the original remains recovered at the site was in October.

Recently authorities have been sifting through about 60 truckloads of debris unearthed by construction crews working on the new World Trade Center tower in recent years. That process began earlier this month and has recovered more than 20 potential human remains.

Knicks honor 1973 NBA championship team

Story Published: Apr 6, 2013 at 5:01 AM MDT

Story Updated: Apr 6, 2013 at 5:01 AM MDT

NEW YORK (AP) ? Hoping to contend for a title this season, the New York Knicks are honoring their last team to win one.

The Knicks assembled most of their 1972-73 championship team for a 40th anniversary celebration. The team had a dinner Thursday and was to be recognized Friday during halftime of their game against the Milwaukee Bucks.

With six future Hall of Fame players, the Knicks beat the Los Angeles Lakers in five games to win their second title in four years. New York has been back to the NBA Finals just twice since.

Former Knick Bill Bradley says: "Once a Knick fan, always a Knick fan, and for 40 years we've been suffering Knick fans."

But the franchise was once among the NBA's best, also winning in 1970 and reaching the '72 finals.

Amid Egypt's Divisive Climate, Kerry Urges Economic Action

Secretary of State John Kerry (center, right) meets with members of Egyptian political parties in Cairo Saturday.

Secretary of State John Kerry (center, right) meets with members of Egyptian political parties in Cairo Saturday.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry walked into a chaotic situation in Egypt, the first Arab country he's visited in his new role. The country is in economic and political turmoil, and he is trying Sunday to encourage Islamist President Mohamed Morsi to open up the political process and carry out much-needed reforms. After their meeting, he announced the U.S. would release $190 million in aid to Egypt.

Kerry has also been hearing complaints from opposition figures, who have vowed to boycott upcoming elections.

He is making it clear he didn't come to lecture, but rather to consult to help Egypt, a key Arab partner, get through difficult times. The road to democracy, he says, is a long one.

"I say with both humility and with a great deal of respect, that getting there requires a genuine give-and-take among Egypt's political leaders and civil society groups, just as we are continuing to struggle with that in our own country," he says.

Kerry argued that coming together to handle the country's economic crisis was particularly urgent.

A Push For 'Reconciliation'

He met Saturday with opposition figures in a group setting at his hotel in Cairo. Among them was Mohammed el-Orabi, who briefly served as foreign minister and is now the deputy chairman of the Congress Party.

"We will boycott the upcoming election, and we told him that," el-Orabi says.

He says Kerry didn't ask them to change their minds, but that he promised to urge President Mohammed Morsi to allow free and fair elections.

"In the meantime, he was also very strong ... that Egypt should start to rebuild its economy very soon," el-Orabi says. "Otherwise, it will be a failed state, and this might give some ... potential to real chaos in this country."

Also in attendance was Anwar Esmat Sadat of the Reform and Development Party, a nephew of the late Egyptian leader Anwar Sadat. Sadat says he listened carefully to Kerry's thoughts about Egypt's fractious politics.

"There has to be sort of reconciliation. There has to be a united [Egypt], so we can go through these difficult times that we have," Sadat says. "So he's been ... quite helpful in listening and also giving his advice."

Waiting On Inclusion

Not everyone Kerry invited showed up, and some protesters elsewhere in Cairo were reportedly burning pictures of the secretary, accusing him of supporting Egypt's Islamist government.

But Kerry seemed calm in the face of this, telling reporters traveling with him that he heard very passionate perspectives from Egyptians who are committed to the democracy they fought for in their revolution.

"There was a divergency of views in terms of the adamancy, but they all shared a sense that they need to be more a part of the process, more included," Kerry said. "They recognize the economic challenge, but they believe there's a need to fulfill the promise of democracy. And so do we. We believe that, too."

In Need Of Funds

But Kerry is urging all actors in Egypt from the Islamist government to secular opposition to come together to deal with their economic woes first. He says it is "paramount, essential, urgent" that the Egyptian economy gets back on its feet.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr says his country is counting on the U.S. to help.

"We expect from friends, particularly the United States, to stand by Egypt during this period," he says.

Egypt is already one of the largest recipients of U.S. aid, most of it military. Kerry says he wants to do more to support small businesses and trade.

He's trying to encourage the Egyptian government, though, to take the steps needed to reach a deal with the International Monetary Fund that would bring in $4.8 billion to the country. U.S. officials say it would also unlock more U.S. aid.

US Commercial Real Estate Market Slowly Recovers

The National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries Board (NCREIF) reports that the US commercial real estate (CRE) market is on a slow mend, according to indices for investments in 2012. Sales surged last year to nearly $64 billion, and experts at Co-Star Group report that such a high volume has not been seen in the CRE market since 2004. Indices show that the multifamily and office sectors in central business districts were the hottest markets last year and NCREIF analysts say the recovery has even spread to the retail sector. For more on this continue reading the following article from National Real Estate Investor.?

The indices have been released for 2012, and they show continued steady strength for commercial property investments.

?Real estate investment returns have a reputation for stability, and 2012 has reinforced that,? says Ron Kaiser, chairman of the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries (NCREIF) Board. ?Not only have quarterly total returns again come in at the 2.5 percent level, but all property types and nearly all geographic regions report similar numbers.?

The volume of sales surged in 2012, which helped to support these strong returns. Sales volume reached nearly $64 billion in 2012, the highest annual total since 2004, according to the Co-Star Group Inc. Since the crash, the volume of commercial real estate sale has risen steadily, and activity spiked upwards in December as investors rushed to close deals before the end of the year and improving market fundamentals and attractive yields drew investors to commercial real estate.

The recovery is also broadening to the lower end of the pricing market. CoStar?s equal-weighted composite index sped up its growth in the second half of 2012 and registered 8.1 percent for the year. Meanwhile, CoStar?s value-weighted composite index, which concentrates on more valuable properties, registered just 4.3 percent growth. That?s still fast than inflation, but less than its double-digit growth throughout 2011.

According to the CoStar indices, ?Investors are moving beyond core properties and driving up pricing at the lower end of the market.?

The numbers from Moody?s/RCA Commercial Property Price Indices, which also sample a broad range of markets and properties, also showed an increase of 8.1 percent for U.S. commercial real estate prices in 2012.

The NCREIF Property Index, which favors institutional-quality properties, also marked stable, solid investment returns. That includes appreciation to the value of properties 4.51 percent in 2012, roughly matching CoStar?s ?value weighted? numbers for the year. NCREIF?s property index also includes 5.84 percent returns from income from properties, adding to a total return of 10.54 percent.

Among the various property types, some old favorites still did very well in 2012. The Moody?s/RCA CPPI showed that office and apartment properties in central business districts were the hottest sectors, with price increases of 19.1 percent and 11.2 percent, respectively, for the year. Suburban office was the only sector to see a price decline in 2012, edging down by 0.8 percent.

"The CBD office sector has been a leader in the post-crisis recovery, and both its major and non-major market components posted double-digit returns in 2012," says Moody?s Director of Commercial Real Estate Research Tad Philipp. "The performance of apartments in major markets was just warm during 2012 but the results from non-majors was enough to make it a hot sector overall."

The real estate recovery also spread to retail properties, according to NCREIF. Its index of institutional properties shows that retail properties were the best performing in the fourth quarter with a 2.97 percent total return, and for the whole year with an 11.61 percent return. That?s just ahead of the apartment sector?s 11.23 percent return. The hotel sector was the worst performer for the year with an 8.23 percent return, which really isn?t that bad.

Militants kill 4 policemen in attacks in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Assailants opened automatic fire on police checkpoints in central and northern Iraq early on Wednesday, killing four officers and wounding five, officials said.

In one attack, gunmen in two speeding cars sprayed policemen with machinegun fire in the town of Musayyib, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) south of the capital Baghdad. Two officers were killed and four were wounded there, a police official said.

In the other attack, militants on foot exchanged fire with police at a checkpoint in the city of Mosul, 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad, killing two policemen and wounding one.

Two hospital officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Security forces are frequently targeted by insurgents seeking to undermine government efforts to restore security in Iraq after years of strife.

Despite a significant drop in violence since the height of insurgency several years ago, militants still launch deadly attacks almost daily.

The Yeshiva World Some Rabbonim Prohibit Coalition Talks on ...

Rabbonim attending a motzei Shabbos kenos against drafting chareidim are less than pleased with the fact that Yahadut Hatorah is entering into coalition talks which may result in a compromise solution pertaining to the drafting of bnei Torah. Walla News quotes kenos organizers as saying that they feel it is incorrect for Yahadut Hatorah to release messages of compromise, a willingness to accept one formula for drafting bnei Torah or another. The reject the very sitting in a room and indicating a solution may be reached, rejecting the concept of drafting any chareidim into the IDF.

The daily HaPeles newspaper affiliated with the Yerushalmi faction of Degel Hatorah reported that participants in the kenos reject any discussion of any compromise, seemingly innocent as it may be. The representative of the Sephardi bnei Torah, Rav Yaakov Ben-Naim sent a message to Shas MKs, calling upon them not to participate in talks surrounding a chareidi compromise on the draft issue. ?We state that one may not sit with the other side to discuss this. It is like playing with fire? Rav Ben-Naim is quoted as saying.

HaRav Baruch Shmuel HaKohen Deutsch of Yeshivas Kol Torah attended the kenos, warning ?Needless to say no one sitting here feels they just want to draft bnei Torah. They want to secularize Klall Yisrael G-d forbid, beginning with the bnei Torah. The matter demands mesirus nefesh.?

The words of HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach Shlita who remains uncompromising on the issue were heard at the kenos too. The rav is quoted as saying ?we must do what we can without wavering and without discussions. There must not be negotiating. This is a basic tenet of Yiddishkheit and we must take it to the end.?

The participants reached a decision, that they cannot support any change in the issue of drafting bnei Torah. The kenos called on elected chareidi leaders to leave the negotiating table and protest instead, demanding a new law that will protect those involved in the continued study of Torah.
